In today’s fast-paced world, stress can accumulate in our bodies in ways we don’t always recognise. Until, of course, our body starts complaining! Thankfully, if we are aware of where to place our hands on our body then this is how Jin Shin Jyutsu can provide stress relief.
Whether it’s physical, mental, emotional, digestive, or even spiritual tension, our bodies store it like a pressure cooker. Without a proper way to release this buildup, the pressure continues to rise until it finally erupts in discomfort, illness, or emotional overwhelm.

Take the top off the pressure cooker!
Imagine your body as a pressure cooker. Every day, stress accumulates – work deadlines, emotional challenges, physical ailments, and environmental factors all contribute to the growing internal pressure. When we don’t have an effective way to let go of this tension, it builds and builds until the ‘lid’ blows off. This can manifest as physical pain, anxiety, digestive issues, or even more serious health conditions.
What Jin Shin Jyutsu does so elegantly is that it takes the top off the pressure cooker. In essence, it acts as a release valve, allowing us to regulate and reduce this internal pressure.
Our 26 SELs are like safety valves
In fact, we can do this by using our 26 safety energy locks to gently promote the body’s energy to flow freely. The 26 SELs are spheres of concentrated energy that bind the energy together. Mary Burmeister, a foremost teacher of Jin Shin Jyutsu says: “By applying our jumper cable (our hand) we can recharge our ‘run-down’ energy battery.
So by placing our hands on these locations, we help open them and release excess energy. This allows the body to restore itself naturally, bringing relief from pain, anxiety, and other stress-related issues.
For instance, Safety Energy Lock 15 (shown) is particularly effective in speeding up recovery if you’ve broken a bone or had to undergo surgery.

This just shows how powerful and intelligent the body is when given the support it needs to heal itself. Furthermore, by understanding the meaning and function of each one of our Safety Energy Locks we can tap into the body’s natural ability to repair and regenerate itself on all levels!
