When the anxiety turns nasty
A few years ago, I enjoyed my daily coffee at a lovely cafe. I remember the day well because it was sunny and I had the day off. I was looking forward to going shopping. A real treat.
After my leisurely cappuccino, I headed to a clothes shop. There, my body suddenly went into meltdown.
My heart started beating loud and fast, I felt a bit dizzy and I had some difficulty breathing. My first thought was: “Oh my God, what is happening to me?” My car wasn’t too far, so I managed to get back to it. I needed somewhere to sit quietly and practice my Jin Shin Jyutsu!
The first thing I did was cross my arms and place my hands on the insides of my knees at Safety Energy Lock 1. This is the energy site I talk a lot about for EMERGENCIES. It did help, as it took the edge off all my symptoms.
I kept thinking: “What could have possibly caused this to happen?” Then I realised it must have been the coffee. I remember thinking it was very strong, and my guess is that they put a double shot in. The caffeine sent my nervous system into overdrive. And knowing what I know now about the VAGUS NERVE, the symptoms all make sense.
A great Jin Shin Jyutsu hold for anxiety
My next thought was: “I need to calm my nervous system.”
That’s when I used two energy sites, SEL 17 and 18 to help me.
In Jin Shin Jyutsu we use a system of 26 energy sites, or Safety Energy Locks as we call them. Each one is a sphere of concentrated energy and is about the size of the palm of the hand. Each one has a specific meaning, location and function.
Safety Energy Lock 17 is located on the outside of the wrist on the little finger side and is incredibly helpful for the nervous system – it relaxes the mind and nerves. It also helps the heart, it helps to clear the chest, and releases tension in the back. And it also has the same effect as a smelling salt when one feels faint or lightheaded.
I also used Safety Energy Lock 18 which helps clear the head. It also helps harmonise the rib cage.
It took a little while, but I held the left wrist and eventually, everything calmed down and I felt normal again.
The Exercise
Place the left hand over the right wrist at SEL 17 and
Fold the right fingers onto the right base of thumb at SEL 18 (shown).
To do the other side:
Place the right hand over the left wrist at SEL 17 and
Fold the left fingers onto the left base of thumb at SEL 18.
There is no need to apply any pressure. Relax the hands and hold. Hold until there is relief and then keep holding for a little bit longer. You can do one side or both, up to you.
